Dramatic Orkney Islands photography workshop locations
The Orkney Islands are home to many iconic locations such as the prehistoric sites at Skara Brae, Ring of Brodgar Maes Howe the Stones of Stenness and many more, there is also a wealth of lesser-known coves, sea stacks, natural arches and breathtaking cliffs around the dramatic and often stormy coastline.
Such a wealth of choice and variety for a great Orkney Islands photography workshop experience! Please contact me for booking details and more information.
Sunrises and sunsets
Landscape photographers will be familiar with the blue, and golden hours of sunrise and sunset and no landscape photography workshop portfolio would be complete without the dramatic light that can be had during those brief periods.
We cannot guarantee the type of light we’ll have on our Orkney Islands photography workshop, but there will be light and it often changes rapidly. Even the seemingly least inspiring conditions offer great photography opportunities. The bottom image below, taken at Evie Bay in rapidly fading light on a wet evening, is an example of how conditions are not always as poor as they may seem!
The Islands in November are often bathed in stormy, intense light and there is always the possibility that that we may be lucky enough to see and photograph the Aurora Borealis! The unpredictability of the light and weather at this time of year is one of the reasons why our photography workshops in Orkney have been scheduled during November and you can concentrate on your photography without being plagued by midges!
The days are shorter and it is perfectly possible to photograph both sunrise and sunset on the same day without having to endure an exceptionally long and tiring day in the field.

Orkney Islands photography workshop notes
Our Orkney Islands photography workshop with guiding and personal tuition by Steve Walton FMPA FBIPP is available to photographers of all abilities, whether you’re taking your first tentative steps or have many years of photography experience behind you, all film and digital photographers are equally welcome.
This creative photography workshop in Orkney will take place during 18th-20th November 2022. The workshop is three days duration, approximately 8-10 hours per day. There are no arduous hikes or climbs but attendees do require a moderate level of fitness and mobility.
There are numerous toilets situated around the Islands and they are generally well maintained in good, clean condition. There are also plenty of options for refreshment stops, but attendees must be prepared for the outdoors and possible rapid changes of weather conditions.
Warm and waterproof clothing is mandatory and a layering system is advisable. You will need to provide your own accommodation, food and refreshments each day as this is not included in the cost of the workshop.
The weather can be warm and balmy in the morning and suddenly change to cold wind, rain, sleet and hail in the afternoon, so please come prepared for, and expect, all weather conditions. Take the view that it’s a small price to pay for the dramatic light and sea conditions that landscape photographers love!
Daily minibus pick up and drop-off at our meeting point near Hamnavoe ferry terminal in Stromness and transport to workshop locations by our licensed local guide is included. A maximum of six attendees on the workshop will ensure that you will have ample 1-to-1 tuition and guidance by Steve.
In order to provide clients with maximum flexibility during their time on Orkney, we do not include accommodation or meals in the cost of the workshop. However, socialising with our guests is important to ensure a great time for everyone and you are positively encouraged to meet up with us in the evenings as a group for dinner at a bistro or restaurants in Stromness.
